PUPUKE TAHAROTO DEMOLITION

Pupuke Taharoto Demolition, North Shore Hospital

Description of work:

  • Demolition of the Pupuke, Taharoto and associated buildings at North Shore Hospital, including the removal and safe disposal of asbestos and other contaminants, to make way for future development on the North Shore Hospital campus.
  • Works carried out in four stages, to the Taharoto / Boiler & Kitchen Wing, Pupuke Wing and adjacent buildings, as well as separate Groundsmen’s buildings.
  • Buildings were first stripped internally of Class A asbestos. Class B asbestos was then removed, and a fully controlled demolition (asbestos demolition) was carried out.

Special features:

  • The largest demolition and asbestos removal project of its kind in Auckland at the time.
  • Prior to any works being carried out, protection of critical infrastructure and isolation of services had to be undertaken to allow the rest of the hospital campus to continue to operate.
  • A heavy duty vehicle crossing was established at Shea Terrace at the beginning of the works, so that trucks could directly access the site rather than traverse through the hospital campus.
  • A specialised dirty water collection system was designed and implemented onsite to ensure any contaminated water from the building footprint was retained and safely disposed of.
