Focus Group of Companies

Focus Construction Group consists of four individual companies, covering key aspects of commercial construction, interior fitouts, remediation and reinstatement requirements. Each of the four companies stands independently but also works cohesively with the other companies; providing integrated end-to-end solutions.

We work closely and cohesively with you to deliver your unique vision.

The company stands by its name – with a focus on quality, from the project's inception through to completion. What sets us apart is our genuine can-do partnership approach, allowing us to really understand what you want and then deliver on your vision. And because we truly get it, we work towards the best result - over and above merely following a rigid list of pre-agreed project tasks.

This ensures the process is flexible and easy, delivering results that provide the best possible outcome with the least amount of hassle. We believe that getting the job done properly from the outset is the best solution for all parties.

Our building construction team specialises in ‘low-rise’ commercial and industrial projects, with experience in light industrial, residential development and small to medium sized commercial building construction projects.

Our interiors constructon and fitout team is a leader in the field, with substantial and varied category experience including: large corporates, major banks, high-end retail outlets, medical, and educational institutions.

Focus has its own patented interior partitioning system, developed by founder Barry Plumpton. In December 2007 we commenced laying Netfloor raised access flooring systems and are now the exclusive distributor of all Netfloor products throughout New Zealand.

Our remediation team is geared for seismic strengthening and the repair and recladding of leaky buildings, with extensive experience in both commercial and government sectors.

Our reinstatements team specialises in interior and exterior building repair and reinstatement to original condition, after damage caused by fire, water or other insurance-related causes.

Focus was founded by Barry and Alicia Plumpton in September 1999. Now consisting of four specialised companies, the Focus Construction Group has became a leading name in commercial construction projects and is based in an impressive purpose-built building with a prominent position beside Auckland’s North Western Motorway.

Barry is a qualified Quantity Surveyor and leads a team of other highly experienced Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers, who like Barry have more than 20 years experience as construction industry professionals.

As Managing Director, Barry has used his technical, management and leadership skills to grow Focus into a successful, multi-million dollar business, having also developed his own patented aluminium partitioning system. Drive, determination, innovation, team leadership and coaching are the qualities that Barry has brought to Focus’ success.

In 2013, Mike Dixon and Nick Whittaker joined Barry as shareholders and company directors, a move signaling Barry’s commitment to growth - while continuing Focus’ personal approach to client partnerships.

Focus offers the complete construction package, from general maintenance and alteration work, refurbishments, new office & retail fitout, right through to medium sized construction projects. Our experienced and personable team are focused on bringing your vision to life. Currently this includes Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, Site Managers, Foremen, and teams of carpenters, partition erectors and other sub-trade workers. All are either Focus employees or are hand-picked contractors and all live up to the high standards Focus expects of people in their employment.

Working on projects on occupied sites or buildings while people continue to go about their business and ensuring minimal disruption is second nature to us, often requiring us to work in areas that require hoarding off from public, and out of hours works. This is one of our strengths and we can offer many references.

The very nature of our business means we often have to consider how our presence may affect the safety and productivity of our clients’ employees and/or the public. This may require the erecting of hoardings to avoid possible noise and dust issues, redirecting of foot traffic away from where contractors are working and ensuring stringent deadlines are met - in many cases we are required to work after hours. This is one of the many strengths our clients comment on after a project's completion and are often referred to in references.

As a hands-on privately owned company, we are consistently able to deliver a very high standard of service. This is achieved by making experienced management decisions on the spot, while our ready access to quality contractors means we have sufficient resources to undertake any fitout or medium sized construction project.

At Focus we believe each client and their project is unique, and as a result each is treated with the individual care and attention they deserve. Key to the success of each project is appointing a suitable and experienced Project Manager and a Site Manager or Supervisor who are actively involved in the day-to-day management and reporting. Where and when required, additional supervision is put in place for specialised trades. Focus is also able to deliver what many of our competitors can’t, that being our comprehensive and cost-effective Project Completion Service. After each project's completion, Focus offers all clients access to a reliable handyman service. This way, general maintenance duties and odd jobs are taken care of without incurring large expense. Preventative maintenance such as this avoids small issues becoming big and costly.

With Focus you can rest assured that we will always provide solutions, not problems or excuses. We take extreme pride in the quality of service and finish that we offer, demanding the same from all employees and subcontractors.

We are a professional and competitive business focused on offering our customers the best overall package and are happy to provide any budgeting advice you may require.

What sets us apart from other construction companies is our genuine can-do partnership approach, allowing us to really understand what you want and deliver on your vision. And because we truly get it, we work towards the best result - over and above merely following a rigid list of pre-agreed project tasks. This ensures the entire construction process is flexible and easy, delivering results that provide the best possible outcome with the least amount of hassle.

At Focus we take our environmental responsibilities seriously and where practicable apply these principles to every project:

  • Avoid: Choose products that produce minimal waste
  • Reduce: Produce less waste
  • Reuse: Use product again in its original form
  • Recycle: Produce new products from used materials.
  • Recover: Use source materials where possible

Some examples of this include:

  • All aluminium incorporated in our extrusion and raised floor systems utilise recycled materials.
  • Our staff and subcontractors are trained prior to starting on site to maximise the volume and quality of materials salvaged in the course of each project.
  • We only use timber from sustainable resources.
  • Internally we actively promote recycling of all materials and have an in-house sorting area.
  • We are licensed operators to the Waitakere Waste Collection Baling Station, where all waste materials are sorted for recycling.
  • We are currently investigating the use of recycled materials for framing.
  •  We chose MCK metals to extrude our aluminum sections, due to their  environmentally friendly position towards promoting sustainable building.

Safety is paramount at Focus and as a result we have a comprehensive Health and Safety Policy. This is also backed up by all employees having Site Safe accreditation and a culture of “A Safe Site is a Good Site”, with a target of Zero Harm on all of our sites.

All subcontractors are inducted onto sites and made aware of site specific hazards. We also hold regular “Toolbox” meetings to discuss upcoming events and plan in advance how to minimise any risk. Our staff all wear company branded shirts & High-visibility vests, ensuring they are easily identifiable. These measures are backed up by regular onsite “spot checks” from our Health & Safety Manager.

For education sector contracts and on occupied sites, additional hazard protection and isolations are required, as the occupants in some cases may not be able to read or understand English, and therefore may not be aware of any eminent dangers. Here we completely isolate all work areas with temporary fixed fencing barriers, as well as providing clear hazard danger signage. Also (depending on site condition and client requests) we provide an initial and then periodic briefing to the occupants/pupils, to further educate them on the dangers of building sites when work is going on and also after hours dangers.

We have our own customised comprehensive safety management plan, as well as a master plan and subcontractor/employee handbook for general information. These contain all standard site safety and hazard identification forms and where required, copies of any specialist material safety data sheets would be given to the client/school to be kept on file.

Focus operates with our own tailored and comprehensive Quality Assurance policy, which again can be provided on request. In summary it includes the following:

  • Details of personnel & their key responsibilities
  • External documentation supplied by the client
  • Sample control
  • Inspection of goods upon receipt
  • Installation, inspection & testing
  • Final testing
  • Control of non-conforming product
  • Quality control recording sheets/checklists

This Focus Construction Group Quality Assurance Plan has a direct affect or how we operate on a day-to-day basis and the quality of product and service we consistently deliver. This is another reason why we have such a large number of repeat clients.
