LAINGHOLM SCHOOL NEW CLASSROOM BLOCK

Laingholm School New Classroom Block

Description of work:

  • Design & Build of a new three-classroom teaching space including bathrooms, outdoor learning space and a basement storage facility.
  • Demolition of existing timber retaining wall and removal of the backfill, consisting of excavation of approximately 700m3 of soil to make way for the new classroom block.
  • Civil Works creating a concrete hardstand area around the front of the new classroom block and landscaping to the rear to complete the project.

Special features:

  • Excavation of the 700m3 of soil was carried out over two weeks at the beginning of winter 2020, with the Focus team facing the huge challenge of the water table constantly flooding during this time.
  • With the new building located right next to the school’s playground, we had to be extra vigilant and careful with safety management. One strategy Focus used was to regularly invite the school to watch an interesting part of the construction process. Simply being engaged in this way helped to ensure the children were aware of the dangers of the construction site.
